STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.Impact of ball weight on medial elbow torque in youth baseball pitchers
HYPOTHESIS: Our hypothesis was that an increase in ball weight would result in an increase in medial elbow torque during the pitching motion.
METHODS: Youth pitchers were recruited for this study and instructed to throw 5 maximum-effort fastballs from ground level using baseballs of 4 different weights: 85 g (3 oz), 113 g (4 oz), 142 g (5 oz), and 170 g (6 oz). The validated Motus sensor was used to assess medial elbow torque, arm speed, arm slot, and shoulder rotation for each pitch. Pitch velocity was measured using a radar gun. Relationships between baseball weight and pitching kinetics and/or kinematics were evaluated using linear mixed-effects analysis. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The importance of the hip capsule and its effect on hip biomechanics, functional outcomes, and hip arthroscopy success rates has been demonstrated in recent studies. These results have led to a shift in management of the hip capsule, where an increasing number of surgeons routinely perform complete capsular closure. The purpose of this review is to highlight recent studies evaluating the hip capsule and describe contemporary capsular management and repair.
Diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for rotator cuff tears
Abstract Ultrasonography (US) is an inexpensive, convenient, and effective tool that can be used to evaluate the shoulder. It does not expose the patient to harmful radiation and can be used to evaluate the musculoskeletal system dynamically. Additionally, US is not subject to metal artifacts when evaluating patients with previously placed hardware. Over the years, US has been found to be reliable and accurate for diagnosing rotator cuff tears (RCTs), despite its operatordependence. The usage of US for diagnosing RCTs in orthopedic practice varies depending on practitioners' familiarity with the exam and the availability of experienced technicians. The purpose of this article is to review the diagnostic accuracy of US for identifying RCTs.
